The Markham Hotel: Downtown Gulfport’s Historic Stay, Reimagined

The Markham Hotel has returned to downtown Gulfport, bringing new life to one of the city’s most recognizable historic addresses.

Originally established in 1926, the eight-story hotel was designed by the architectural firm Marshall and Fox and named for Charles Markham, former president of the Illinois Central Railroad. For decades, the Markham served business travelers, local gatherings, and guests drawn to Gulfport’s waterfront district. After years of change, storm damage, and vacancy, the property has been brought back as a modern hotel while preserving the character of its historic exterior.

Today, The Markham is open once again, offering polished guest rooms, The Library restaurant and bar, Velvet Bean coffee shop, rooftop cocktails at the Upstairs Bar, and event spaces for weddings, corporate gatherings, and private celebrations.

Set about one block from the Mississippi Sound, The Markham gives guests and locals a fresh way to experience downtown Gulfport. The Upstairs Bar is open to hotel guests and the public, and no room key is required.

From overnight stays to dinner, drinks, meetings, and milestone celebrations, The Markham Hotel is once again part of Gulfport’s story.
